We designed this one around the part of the job nobody photographs: the half hour before the first frame. The columns go up to 10ft, so the top edge sits above the subject rather than in the frame.

We build it in aluminium alloy because gear that lives in a car boot gets handled badly. The build includes a retractable crossbar and a handheld remote. We would rather you bought the smaller frame and used it than the big one that stays in the bag.

Key features

  • Retractable Crossbar. The retractable design makes the crossbar more flexible in use. Users can adjust to the appropriate width as required to adapt to different sizes of background backdrop.
  • Sturdy Tripod Backdrop Stand. With adjustable height (3.3ft/1m–10ft/3m) , the aluminum alloy backdrop stand is durable, and the design of the tripod base ensures it won’t shake when fully extended to its maximum size.
  • Newly Designed Non-Slip Light Stand. 1. Industry-leading reverse folding design, effectively reduce space occupation. 2. The light stand is detachable, and you can manually control the light stand pole to adjust the direction and height of the softbox. 3. The height of the light stand can be adjusted from 18 to 65 inches, and the node is fixed with a plate buckle to make it easier to use 4. The bottom rubber sleeve design makes the tripod more stable and non-slip on your energy bill.
  • 85W LED light with remote control. Input Voltage of 110-245V AC. Adjustable brightness and color temperature 85W LED light blub (with remote control). Color temperature can be adjusted between 3000K and 6000K. The remote control can be adjusted within 7M(23FT) range.
  • 16"x 16"Soft box. 16"x 16" soft box silver reflective inner lining, the removable front diffusion spreads light into a homogenous soft light. The soft box is equipped with a 3-meter power cord to increase the range of movement of the softbox light kit. And give away 3 wire buckles, which is convenient for fixing and organizing the power cord.

The job it does

A softbox turns a small bright lamp into a large dull one, and large dull light is what makes a face read as a face. A kit like this covers portraits, product photography and interviews; put a third head on the background and the subject stops being stuck to the backdrop behind them.

Sizing it against your photography backdrop stand

Work out the size from the room rather than from the catalogue. Measure the wall you shoot against, take a foot off each end for the legs, and what is left is the span a frame opens to and can honestly accommodate. Height is the figure people change their mind about later: seven feet suits a seated subject, while a standing full-length shot wants the frame fully expanded so the top edge of a seamless white, muslin, black or green surface stays out of shot. Space behind the subject matters as much as space across it — stood directly against the surface, anybody picks up its texture. In a small room, give yourself a little extra at the back so an additional panel or a prop can go in without everything having to move. As a general rule, choosing one size up costs less than choosing one size down.

Getting it standing

Assembly is quick and standard. Pull each telescopic section up by hand, lock the adjustable collar, square the base. The mounting threads are the usual size for this kind of gear, so a fitting borrowed from another stand will do, and the whole setup takes one pair of hands. The legs open wide, and that width is the stability — not the thickness of the tube. Position the base so nobody kicks a foot, and add weight at the feet whenever the load is heavy or people are moving across the room behind the frame.

Clamps, hooks and the top edge

A spring clamp at each corner secures the top edge and hooks spread the load along the crossbar, so the surface hangs straight instead of scalloping between two points. The same clamp keeps a light cable or a tripod leg out of frame when the kit gets crowded, without needing a second pair of hands.

Travel, bag and care

The bag in the package is the one it will spend its life in: collapsible frame, small parts, extra clamps. Folded it is portable enough for a train and compact enough for a boot. Durability lives in the fittings. Aluminum alloy gives an enhanced strength for the weight, the material of the locking collars decides the rest, and the practicality of a professional design beats a powerful specification nobody uses. Quality here means the metal has not moved in a year. Care is minimal: wipe the sections, keep the clamps in the same bag, store it dry. Roll fabric rather than folding it and a wrinkle stops being something you plan around.
