We keep our Ring Light Wall Mount Boom Arm, Adjustable 51in/130cm Mounted Overhead Stand, 180°Rotation Heavy Duty Triangle Bracket Mounting Bar for Camera, Photography Lighting, Barber Led Lamp in the range because most shoots need one dependable frame, not five clever ones.

It arrives with a heavy-duty build. Specifications here are read straight off our own listing — no rounding, no best case.

Key features

  • Easy to Use: Standard spigot head with 1/4 screw on one end and 3/8 screw on the other end, compatible with strobe lights, monolight, ring lights, softbox, reflectors, DSLR and microphone, etc

What this one is for

Height is the specification people regret. For a seated portrait the key wants to be a little above eye level with room to angle down; for background support, match the stand to the backdrop you already own rather than the other way round.

Matching it to a photography backdrop stand

Choosing the size is arithmetic rather than taste. Measure the wall across, subtract roughly a foot at each end for the legs and the fittings, and you have the span the frame has to accommodate when it is fully open. Height comes next, and it is the figure that changes once a subject stands: a seated portrait is happy at seven feet, a standing one wants everything expanded so the top edge of a muslin, seamless white, black or green surface stays above the shot. Keep a step of space behind the subject rather than putting them directly against the surface. In a small room, buy a little extra width — that is where an additional panel, a light or a prop ends up living. As a general matter, one size up forgives more than one size down.

Putting it up

Setup is hands only. The sections are telescopic, so you assemble it by pulling up and locking rather than by counting parts, and the adjustable collars let you stop anywhere between the stops. Mounting uses the standard fitting for this type of gear, so it mates with what is already in your bag, and it goes up quickly enough to do alone. Stability is a question of footprint. Open the legs to their stops, press the feet down, and position the base so the heaviest part of the load sits over it — weight in the right place does more for a support system than weight in total.

Clamping, hooks and the crossbar

Hang the surface a little narrower than the crossbar so it has something to pull against. A spring clamp secures each corner, hooks carry the middle, and that clamp will just as happily hold a light modifier or pin a cable to a tripod tube when the kit outgrows the room.

Carrying it and keeping it

Folded, it is compact enough to transport as one piece: the carry bag in the package takes the whole collapsible set, so no extra sections travel loose. Durability lives in the fittings. Aluminum alloy gives an enhanced strength for the weight, the material of the locking collars decides the rest, and the practicality of a professional design beats a powerful specification nobody uses. Quality here means the metal has not moved in a year. Wipe the metal down after an outdoor event, keep the small parts together, and store it standing rather than flat under something heavier. Fabric care is one rule: rolled, not folded — a wrinkle photographs.

This mount surprises me every day.

I bought this as a camera down angle mount, and it has become so much more. The sturdiness of the telescoping post surprises me with the weight capacity. I currently have an 18in ring light attached to it that also holds a GoPro and a few extras. This is an amazing way to get that ring light off of a tripod and on the wall, while also giving you an easy way to store it out of the way.

    Great in the right room

These are a game changer for me. Getting rid of 2 light stands in a very small studio opened the space nicely. You should beware that if you loosen the extension and there is a load you need to hold it steady or it will spin on you. The length and rotation work perfectly in the room I am using them. It holds a smallish flat led light with a small soft box attached with no issue.

    Great lights for procedures.

I needed an adjustable light in an office with VERY high ceilings and not great lighting. This is perfect for my uses.
