Our 86" Light Stand Photography, Portable Reverse Folding Tripod Stand is the piece we hand over when a room has to turn into a set in one go. The columns go up to 86in, so the top edge sits above the subject rather than in the frame.

The frame is aluminium alloy, which is the difference between a stand that travels and one that bends. You also get telescopic sections, a folding frame, a portable format and a reversible panel. We would rather you bought the smaller frame and used it than the big one that stays in the bag.

  • Height Adjustable. Featuring four rotatable knobs on its central support column , this photography tripod supports seamless height adjustment, extending from a compact 17.4 inches to a maximum 86 inches. As a heavy-duty light stand, meeting most shooting height requirements
  • Stable tripod with adjustable legs. This stand light features telescopic legs with 2 length settings and three unfolding angles, so it can be positioned stably on uneven surfaces. • Lightweight & Portable. The portable tripod features reversible legs that can flip 180° up or down. The job it does

Height is the specification people regret. For a seated portrait the key wants to be a little above eye level with room to angle down; for background support, match the stand to the backdrop you already own rather than the other way round.

Sizing it against your photography backdrop stand

Work out the size from the room rather than from the catalogue. Measure the wall you shoot against, take a foot off each end for the legs, and what is left is the span a frame opens to and can honestly accommodate. Height is the figure people change their mind about later: seven feet suits a seated subject, while a standing full-length shot wants the frame fully expanded so the top edge of a seamless white, muslin, black or green surface stays out of shot. Space behind the subject matters as much as space across it — stood directly against the surface, anybody picks up its texture. In a small room, give yourself a little extra at the back so an additional panel or a prop can go in without everything having to move. As a general rule, choosing one size up costs less than choosing one size down.

Getting it standing

Setup is hands only. The sections are telescopic, so you assemble it by pulling up and locking rather than by counting parts, and the adjustable collars let you stop anywhere between the stops. Mounting uses the standard fitting for this type of gear, so it mates with what is already in your bag, and it goes up quickly enough to do alone. Stability comes from the base rather than the column: spread the legs fully, position the feet out of the walkway, and it sits stable on a floor that is not quite flat. Anything heavy hanging on the system wants weight at the feet as well.

Hanging it and holding it steady

A spring clamp at each corner secures the top edge and hooks spread the load along the crossbar, so the surface hangs straight instead of scalloping between two points. The same clamp keeps a light cable or a tripod leg out of frame when the kit gets crowded, without needing a second pair of hands.

Travel, bag and care

Folded, it is compact enough to transport as one piece: the carry bag in the package takes the whole collapsible set, so no extra sections travel loose. Aluminium alloy keeps the weight sensible; the metal that decides durability sits in the locks and the joints, not the finish. The design is pro in the only sense that matters — practicality over appearance — and the material trade is plain: aluminum travels, steel survives. Wipe the metal down after an outdoor event, keep the small parts together, and store it standing rather than flat under something heavier. Fabric care is one rule: rolled, not folded — a wrinkle photographs.

    Highly recommended starter stands

Very easy to use, and they work great. 7ft is perfect for my current use cases. The bags they come with are very convenient, and the 1/4" mount on top means a lot of stuff can go on top. I mainly use them to hold smaller portable lights. Just got my second pair and I've been using these and the ones I got about a year ago regularly.

They're good for smaller items. Just be realistic.

These are very light-duty stands. They do reach up to a decent 7 feet; but as far as using for lighting? That's questionable. Possibly with smaller LEDs, very small light and lighboxes. But don't think that these will handle a larger light with a large softbox. So, I'm going to just take off one star since for what you pay, they are decent light-duty stands. But don't be fooled - there's no way you're going to put a 48" octo-box on this with a professional light. The mount just isn't the right size and it's simply just too heavy. But again, you have to take that against what you're paying. Stands that can hold that large of a light cost 10x as much. So, you can see in the image - these are perfect for the small LED lights I have. For the large softbox, you are going to need to spend a LOT more.
