We designed this one around the part of the job nobody photographs: the half hour before the first frame. 10ft of height at the top of the travel gives you slack to raise the whole background once the subject sits down.

The frame is aluminium alloy and metal, which is the difference between a stand that travels and one that bends. The build includes a heavy-duty build and a carry bag. We would rather you bought the smaller frame and used it than the big one that stays in the bag.

Key features

  • Heavy Duty X-Base. Each heavy duty metal base weighs 8 lbs, with an ultra-stable X-shaped structure that evenly distributes the load to prevent shaking. The flat base is stacked saves space for easy storage and safer to use prevents tripping
  • Sturdy & Stable Backdrop Stand. The pipe and drape stand kit is made of high-quality aluminum alloy featuring rust resistance. Thickened pipe and snap-on connecting crossbar provide greater load-bearing capacity, supporting up to 40 lbs
  • Wide Application. Suitable for wedding, birthday, parties, photography, exhibition, trade show and other indoor or outdoor occasions. Equipped with 6 non-slip clips, this backdrop stand for parties lets you hang curtain, drapes, balloons, string lights, and flower walls to create an amazing atmosphere

Where it sits in the range

Every EMART set starts with the same question: what is holding the background up? These are our photography backdrop stands — single crossbar, double, triple, T-shape and full pipe and drape — sized by the width of background they carry.

The job it does

A photography backdrop stand earns its keep by being boring. The frame goes up, the background hangs straight and nothing else in the room has to move. The same support stand serves portraits, seated interviews, pet photography and a photo booth at a wedding, because the job does not change: a clean surface behind the subject that stays where you put it.

What size EMART backdrop stand this suits

Work out the size from the room rather than from the catalogue. Measure the wall you shoot against, take a foot off each end for the legs, and what is left is the span a frame opens to and can honestly accommodate. Height is the figure people change their mind about later: seven feet suits a seated subject, while a standing full-length shot wants the frame fully expanded so the top edge of a seamless white, muslin, black or green surface stays out of shot. Space behind the subject matters as much as space across it — stood directly against the surface, anybody picks up its texture. In a small room, give yourself a little extra at the back so an additional panel or a prop can go in without everything having to move. As a general rule, choosing one size up costs less than choosing one size down.

Getting it standing

Setup, in order: extend each telescopic section, lock the adjustable collar, then square the base. The mounting fitting is standard, so heads and clamps from other stands assemble onto it without an adaptor, and it all happens quickly with two hands. Stability comes from the base rather than the column: spread the legs fully, position the feet out of the walkway, and it sits stable on a floor that is not quite flat. Anything heavy hanging on the system wants weight at the feet as well.

Hanging it and holding it steady

Clamp the corners first and even out the middle afterwards — the top edge is the part that shows. Hooks along the crossbar keep the hang even, a spring clamp secures anything that moves, and one spare clamp per kit saves needing an improvised fix on a tripod or a light tube.

Travel, bag and care

It packs into the carry bag it arrives in — a portable, collapsible package small enough to live in a car boot between shoots, which is the only way gear gets used weekly. The quality worth paying for is boring: metal collars that still grip, a design with no part that only works while new. Aluminum keeps a pro kit portable, heavier metal makes it durable, and durability on gear like this is an argument about joints. We would rather sound dull than claim an excellent finish. Care takes a minute: sections wiped, clamps back in the bag, the whole thing kept upright in a corner. A wrinkle in a surface is a storage problem rather than a fabric problem.
