If the room is borrowed and the call time is tight, this is the kit we would carry in.

The build runs to aluminium and polyester, which keeps the weight sensible without giving up on the joints. It arrives with a heavy-duty build. If a size is missing from this page, it is because we do not make it, not because it sold out.

Where it sits in the range

Every EMART set starts with the same question: what is holding the background up? These are our photography backdrop stands — single crossbar, double, triple, T-shape and full pipe and drape — sized by the width of background they carry.

What this one is for

A photography backdrop stand earns its keep by being boring. The frame goes up, the background hangs straight and nothing else in the room has to move. The same support stand serves portraits, seated interviews, pet photography and a photo booth at a wedding, because the job does not change: a clean surface behind the subject that stays where you put it.

Sizing it against your photography backdrop stand

Choosing the size is arithmetic rather than taste. Measure the wall across, subtract roughly a foot at each end for the legs and the fittings, and you have the span the frame has to accommodate when it is fully open. Height comes next, and it is the figure that changes once a subject stands: a seated portrait is happy at seven feet, a standing one wants everything expanded so the top edge of a muslin, seamless white, black or green surface stays above the shot. Keep a step of space behind the subject rather than putting them directly against the surface. In a small room, buy a little extra width — that is where an additional panel, a light or a prop ends up living. As a general matter, one size up forgives more than one size down.

Putting it up

Assembly is quick and standard. Pull each telescopic section up by hand, lock the adjustable collar, square the base. The mounting threads are the usual size for this kind of gear, so a fitting borrowed from another stand will do, and the whole setup takes one pair of hands. The legs open wide, and that width is the stability — not the thickness of the tube. Position the base so nobody kicks a foot, and add weight at the feet whenever the load is heavy or people are moving across the room behind the frame.

Hanging it and holding it steady

Hang the surface a little narrower than the crossbar so it has something to pull against. A spring clamp secures each corner, hooks carry the middle, and that clamp will just as happily hold a light modifier or pin a cable to a tripod tube when the kit outgrows the room.

Carrying it and keeping it

It packs into the carry bag it arrives in — a portable, collapsible package small enough to live in a car boot between shoots, which is the only way gear gets used weekly. Durability lives in the fittings. Aluminum alloy gives an enhanced strength for the weight, the material of the locking collars decides the rest, and the practicality of a professional design beats a powerful specification nobody uses. Quality here means the metal has not moved in a year. Wipe the metal down after an outdoor event, keep the small parts together, and store it standing rather than flat under something heavier. Fabric care is one rule: rolled, not folded — a wrinkle photographs.
